A striking and somewhat mysterious cedar pine marriage chest with bold compass circle design in white and blue and with feint green ‘eye’ to middle. The outer circle has an arcaded design with dots contained within semi-circular motifs. It’s good robust and clean condition. The ubiquitous compass circle design which is found throughout Europe from east to west is especially frequent on marriage pieces from Anatolia and is associated with folk magic and protection from the evil eye.
