Typical Ottoman bridal box from s-e Turkey or Anatolia with decorative metalwork exterior and contrasting painted interior showing a tree of life (something which often appears in large on carpets) - here it represents the everlasting happiness of married union which according to scripture is perpetuated for the righteous in the after-life, an image of Paradise therefore but conveyed with an almost abstract design and in simple watercolour palette of natural and mineral pigments. The box is a neat size and in original painted condition, unwaxed. Circa 19th century. Rare.
