Rare Painted Pine Cabinet with Penal Cross Symbols
Ref: 5778
A rare item indeed, a pine version of an 18th century bureau bookcase but unusual with two drawers, shelf between and most striking a carved top piece with symbols that clearly references penal crosses, these were folk art hand held wooden crosses mostly associated with pilgrim sites in Donegal and which were made during the penal law period in 18th century Ireland. Cross with short horizontal, birds, star. Dry scraped to it’s old cream paint.
