Rare Folk Painted Marriage Bench from the Fancy Country
Ref: 3950
A joyful folk painted marriage box settle from the so-called Fancy Country a group of ethnic Hungarian villages in the central Transylvanian foothills called by Hungarians, the Kaloteszeg. Up until recent times the villagers wore costumes with the same traditional white and red colouring as this bench and on the occasion of a marriage a couple might have made as part of their dowry a suite of furniture in these colours. When these pieces get some age and wear the colours soften as here and are most attractive. This piece is probably a bench dating from the earlier part of the 20th century or earlier and it has been re-decorated for a later marriage within the same family at some time in the 1940s or 50s probably. It's becoming increasingly difficult to source these as there are not many and the middle classes in the native regions are beginning to appreciate them and some have the money to buy them. Don't expect to this sort of thing available for ever.
