Rare Early Transylvanian Coffer & Bench
Ref: 4862
An early and long pegged box or coffer, originally made to double up as a bench, and ideally suited for hallway.
It is a rare find, remarkable enough as a box or coffer, as the length is uncommon, you might think it was converted to a bench later but if you look at the original rear stile or leg on the right side then the upright of the back rest is continuous, one piece of wood.
The back rest consisting of two long horizontal hewn members slotting into the uprights could be removed. The lower piece has been repaired and is not strong, but this whole back rest section is on the other hand original.
The wider lower hewn planks at back, front and sides that make a frame to slot the bottom boards into are almost 2.5 thick on the underside.
This and the overall weight indicate that this is not a 19th century piece but earlier and possible even medieval. Coffers of this style were plentiful in the 19th century but not with this heft. It feels and looks like pieces we have found before that are dated to the 15th century but it is hard to be precise with a furniture form like this that existed over centuries.
