Long Box Pew or Settle with Decorative Grain Painting
Ref: 5528
An 8ft plus very good original condition box pew or box bench from Central Europe, simple styling and with low arms rests making it suitable for hallway or to accompany a long diner.
It was customary in the 19th century to decorate the country pine furniture by ‘grain painting’, in other words to over-paint the when-new white pine in darker browns in imitation of hardwoods.
Sometimes the artist painted in straight shades of browns to imitate walnut or oak whilst at other times as here the artist created more decorative patterns and effects.
