Joyful Folk Decorated Marriage Bench

A pine and hardwood bench which would have been custom made and painted for a marriage in the Kaloteszeg region of Romania - the ethnic Hungarian Calvanists who lived there adhered to strict folk and marriage customs and a sign of wealth who suites of furniture would be presented to newly weds on their special day in order to furnish their new home. This piece is dated and would have been painted by a professional folk artist and his/her team. The style is in imitation of costume embroidery in what was termed the ‘fancy country’. Solid and gallery condition.
