Antique Oak Bench with Cosmic Tulip Motif
Ref: 6411
You could call this arts and craft if you like, or national art, it’s a late 19th century/turn of the century bench made in homage to the old style of furniture seen in the countryside and hills of Northern Hungary all the way back to the medieval period, it is decorated with super-powered tulips, by this time the tulip had become adopted as the symbol of the Magyar tribes, and was rich in quasi-religous symbolism, a reference back to the Scythians and the days of the steppes when the Hungarians first came to settle in the Alfold or Great Plain. The bench is very solid, heavy, was originally coloured but now an appealing bleached out grey oak colour. Perfect in hall or alongside a farmhouse table Seat is 47cm high.
