Superb Folk Painted Marriage Armoire with Birds
Ref: 5053
A superb marriage cupboard, great original condition, the colouring is dramatic with a rich black ground colour & folk painted panels on the doors of flowers with urns on a pale blue ground & in the central square panels birds, paired bullfinches, female and male, with his dashing red breast, which in European folk lore is symbolic of Christ’s passion. In fact you could say the whole colour scheme of the cupboard is based on the black and red of the male bullfinch. The paired birds also symbolise fidelity in love.
The inside of the cupboard has a hanging space left with pole and this has 54cm internal depth. To the right are shelves. The top piece or cornice removes, and the doors lift off, being on pin hinges.
The piece is dated 1834 and the name of the betrothed also appears below the cornice.
