Folk Painted Marriage Cupboard with Saints
Ref: 5783
A veritable feast of folk painting on this two door marriage cupboard dated to 1847, in the upper panels St Florian and St Sebastian, often seen together in this period as both were Roman soldiers as well as becoming Christian martyrs, there is no downbeat message however, as can be seen in the lower panels with their cornucopia urns of fruits and flowers, the presence of the bulfinch is symbolic as in the folk culture they were symbols of Christ’s sacrifice and victory over evil. Shelves within. Very sound restored condition.
