Carved & Painted Marriage Cupboard with Love Birds
Ref: 5816
A charming and solid pine marriage cupboard or armoire with carved details and paintings in the panels of birds and flowers. The birds with their cute crests are probably waxwings, an over-wintering bird in eastern England and parts of central and north Europe going into Russia who symbolise amongst the peasants selflessness and generosity owing to their habit of sharing food, the courtship ritual of the waxwing involves the male and female bird passing a berry between each other until one accepts and their union is sealed.
