Antique Carved Window Surround with Imperial Eagle
Ref: 5422
A rare deep relief carved wooden pine window surround, from a country house in Russia. Ornate window surrounds on otherwise simple form structures are a feature of Russian architecture in the cities and country house builders copied the idea and in imaginative ways, hence ornate carved window surrounds are a seperate and celebrated branch of Russian folk craft.
This one is a neat size, it has all been properly fixed and made strong, we have even built a rebate to the reverse so that a mirror plate could be applied.
The carving is quite elaborate and almost abstract, at top centre however you can make out a stylised version of the Russian Imperial symbol, a crowned double eagle, this would date the piece probably prior to 1917 when the Revolution dispensed with this image.
