Mint Set of Scott's Waverley Novels in Original Bookcase
Ref: 3874
A nice period piece. Books to furnish a middle class home from the early 20th century. These from a home in Solihull, the set of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley historical romances, originally appearing between 1814 and 32, all 27 books here in 25 volumes bound in blue leather boards published by AC & Black in 1904.
Scott's fame was in decline from the later 1800s but he would have been a household name and a set of Scott would have been a desirable item for a modest home lending gravitas.
These came with their own made to measure bookcase and might have been purchased from a department store. There is a bookmark on chapter 3 of "Ivanhoe"which presumably marks the point of abandonment. One doubts the other books have even been opened. But all dry and fresh, a mint collection.
