Early & Decorative Metal & Pine Door
Ref: 5226
A rare and early door, if it reminds me of anything it is the gaol house door on the corner of Northgate Street in our town of Warwick (see pic), a rare survivor of the 1694 Great Fire & itself dating to the 1560s. This door here hales from much further afield, the hill ranges on the southern shores of the Black Sea, it stands at 116cm high, and was the barn door for a grain store, and Armenian made. My comparison is apt as this door was also a strong door, built for security, & to deter thieves, in the ancient agricultural societies crops were wealth, & provided security for the future & the contingencies of the following year’s harvest. Check out the size of the lock which is 30cm wide. The metalwork is punched with an abstract pattern, a charm not idle decoration, & the cross-design of the door itself draws on ancient protective symbolism. Everything about this door is well made. When dealers refer to pieces made by the Armenians they often say ‘from the Armenian masters’ as these people from earliest times were renowned as architects and all round craft makers.
