Regency Pine 'Bamboo' Washstand in Original Paint
Ref: 2324
A pine side table or stricly speaking washstand, highly decorative, it has a decorative splash-back gallery, towel rails and faux bamboo leg. We have removed the later Victorian paint to reveal the original decorative colouring, a soft cream-white with blue lines and flower decoration. The top had a faux-marble paint effect which is just visible.
When imported knicks-knacks, oriental textiles and the like started to clutter interiors after 1830-40 then the Georgian light colour schemes fell out of favour and pine furniture like this was over-painted in plain browns and blacks or in wood grain patterns that imitated dark woods. Nowadays of course fashion favours clean lines and pale colours in preference to the warm and shadowy clutter of the Victorians, to scratch back through to the old Georgian look in a piece like this is a painstaking but satisfying act of recovery.
