Portrait of Child with Whip by "J Ward"
Ref: 1661
A Regency portrait of child with whip, possibly a boy although it looks like a girl but children of both sexes wore dresses at an early age in those days. This is a fine portrait rather than naive but has an appealing and accomplished simplicity. Re-lined and cleaned, oil on canvas, and in original and good quality frame. On the back of the frame and on the later stretcher traces of a gallery or owner′s label with names and title but undecipherable and in crayon written twice "J. Ward". One can only speculate that this work is by the hand of James Ward, the famous painter of "Gordale Scar" but also a portraitist of children.
