Paintings Pre 1900 » Dormition of the Virgin Icon on Board
Ref: 2103
A large icon painting of the Dormition, ie. the death of the Virgin Mary (her soul went directly to Heaven and so in some formal sense she did not die hence the term, Dormition, a passing over of her soul from one state to another).
This is painted on board, very good condition, needing only a light clean. It has fresh decorative lemons, pinks and blue ground, Italianate colours indicating tempera paints and the buildings in the background have that pre-perspectival Giotto look and with an Armenian architectural style about them (which would be typical of Eastern Romanian church architecture).
Who is the shrunken figure in the foreground being punished by an angel? A thief having his hands cut off. Judas perhaps.
Eastern Europe 18/19th cent.
