Ref: 1392
A terrific primitive oil on canvas in excellent condition, fresh colour, and execution, original rosewood frame and engraved brass plaque of interest to collectors of folk art, militaria and maritime antiques.
This is a portrait of an incident in October 1914 at the beginning of World War I celebrating the heroic victory achieved by SMS Radetsky, a pre-dreadnought warship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. At this time the Radetsky had already been superseded by a new class of battleship and relegated to the second division fleet but in this incident it was called on at the last minute, it’s larger diameter guns on its twin gun turrets specialising in coastal bombardment were able to reach and destroy the French artillery batteries on Mount Lovcem on the Montenegron coast and hence a decisive strategic battle was won – all this the painting accurately summarises in its details.
The plaque reads: “Lovcem Lovetese SMS-Raditsky-pol 1914 oktober nr 22-27”. It is signed by Janos Mull. The Radetsky was handed over to the Italians at the end of the war and scrapped in 1920.
