Virgin and Child Icon on Glass
Ref: 3012
The poorer the people the more colourful their folk art, something similar to this was said by one Irish playwright of the Irish peasantry in the 19th century. Certainly this seems to be the case in Romania where the religious images copied from prints onto cheap glass panels and framed in pine have an almost Indian decorative quality. Here are 4 Virgin and Child - I say Virgin as this is the term used for Mary in the Orthodox church rather than Madonna. These works were painted by self taught peasant artists then sold at country fairs to decorate the homes of the very poor Romanians of Transylvania.
