The Resurrection, Icon on Glass
Ref: 3248
The Orthodox Church objected to the child-like look of the figures in these icons which were made and sold amongst the peasantry and tried to ban their trade - looking back from the 21st century we have come to admire the art of Alfred Wallis, the Douanier Rousseau, and other primitive and outsider art and we can appreciate the Nicula icons for their fresh and decorative qualities. This piece has a wonderful abstract design of flat earthy primaries in orangey red, green, yellow white and blue and this seems to have little to do with the subject matter.
The original pine frame is rather frail. Provenance: private collection.
