Stunning Antique Carved and Painted Wooden Cart
Ref: 2669
It's hard to believe this cart was not made for a marriage or for some special purpose other than use in daily drudgery. We have sold a few carts over the years and they have been quite brawny and work-a-day and some with traces of old paint that raised them above the rest but generally they are not the first thing on the shopping list, this one however was exceptional and had to be bought. It is smaller scaled and finely carved (in excellent nick) with sinewy slender limbs, decorative metal work and finely painted throughout in fresh spring colours.
The style is European folk art with a strong influence of the oriental, a Hellenic-Ottoman mash up, and it came a few yrs back from an expedition to the south eastern Mediterranean region that yielded a group of painted carts but none quite so refined as this one.
With the forks that detach (in background) 4.5m long otherwise 2.5m.
