Shepherd’s Dug-Out Flask
Ref: 1645
Throughout Europe, in the high mountains there were and still are some shepherds′ who practice transhumance, that is, they herd sheep up and down the mountain ranges, according to the time of year, in the summer living in shacks in the high pastures, where they carve utensils for themselves from the plentiful woodlands, such as this primitive dug-out flask, found in the Ukraine, probably for used for collecting milk. It is thickly timbered and worn at the sides which is pleasing and made from a hard wood, it has gained a rich patina and colour too especially around the handle, which is typical. Although a practical item (just a wooden mug) it has the appearance of a sculpture and is very early looking, possibly 19th century or possibly earlier. Treen but could often spotted in ethnographic museums.
