Primitive Carved and Painted Cossack
Ref: 1958
A primitive puppet of striking visage, seemingly very typical of Czech/Central and Eastern Europe, a peasant Highlander, Cossack or Russian figure in woolly hat, perhaps the villain of the piece, straw filled old hemp/linen underclothes cover a wooden body with ainted and carved wooden feet, hands and head. Quaintly old repairs have given him lop-sided limb lengths. Quite often pieces of this age only exist as a head.
Probably 19th century. 120cm with the metal hook/handle.
H: 80cm (31.5in)
