Dowry Box with Green Houses by the Brasov Master
Ref: 2471
A lovely antique pine dowry box with the most the most delicious green colouring and terrific naïve landscape view. The best example of its kind I have found.
If I find these boxes I have always bought them as the work is clearly the work of one artist or school (this would mean family or street)) and as examples of folk painting the work is good.
I call him (or her) the Brasov Master, my playful invention, but truly it is not known at this stage exactly where the pieces originate from. The school typically produced boxes with naïve depictions of buildings on the front in country settings amongst pine trees.
Similar paintings have been found as wall and overmantle paintings and it may be that the author of these works, like the now celebrated Georgian painter, Pirosmani, was also a sign and tavern painter.
This work has some clues to its provenance inside the lid where a striking decoration can be found with inscriptions in freehand. The condition is good. One plank in the base was replaced some time ago.
