Cusco Warrior Angel Painting On Linen
Ref: 1720
An antique painting on linen of a warrior saint or angel from Cusco, Peru. Not a copy, a genuine old piece applied to card-board. Combines European Catholic iconography with native pictorial style and ideas. Paintings of warrior angels or angel arcubuceros were popular in the early 18th cent and produced in quantity in this period. They are one of the quintessential images of Cusco art depicting "Christian" angels but in flamboyant courtly dress wielding old style rifles - an artistic variation or amalgamation of Peruvian 17th century noble style and imported Renaissance imagery of the Archangel Michael with sword.
Peru 18th cent.
