Antique Icon Reverse Painting on Glass
Ref: 2678
This painting is typical of the style of a particular master painter operating in the Brasov area around the end of the 19th century. The works from this School are known for their "chromatic exuberance" and this particular master or sub-school has a characteristic signature look with angels, saints and so on having appealingly solemn but child-like faces. The overall impression is joyful in spite of the "serious" subject matter and gives an insight into the peasant mentality. Original frame and wooden backboards missing and in later wooden frame.
See the museum example illustrated of St George for the family resemblance.
