Antique Coptic Folk Painting on Linen
Ref: 0936
There is a long-standing tradition of painting on linen in Ethiopia and often paintings were attached to the inner walls of buildings especially churches to stunning effect.
Local master painters continued their practice well into the twentieth century and the subject matter of the painters wd later include secular as well as Christian religious themes. This long painting on an strip of cloth of evident age is skilfully painted and narrates a historical village scene that further research would no doubt elucidate. The colours are typically vibrant but harmonious and it works well in an abstract ecorative sense. A self-conscious national folk art of this kind continues to this day and comparisons to those works produced now and in recent times for the tourist "airport" market re-assures one of the skill and authenticity of this example.
