Ref: 0940
A naive watercolour and drawing of Dr John Phillips, Surgeon, of Malpas, Cheshire. Actually a double folk portrait as there is a miniature oval head portrait attached to this work of a curly red-headed artisan-gentleman with a boxer’s profile who is presumably "Edward Randles, the Great Chimney Doctor for Smoking Chimneys". We know all this as in true eccentric English fashion there is a card attached to the back of the piece, written by "Thos. Bostock" giving us all the necessary local historical legend:
"Dr. John Phillips of Malpas, Cheshire, Surgeon. A self taught man, in his time rode not less than three and four horses a day to visit his patients." The works were penned by "Brocklebank", a Rector of Old Chad Chapel, Tushingham. A later owner has followed suit and written details of his re-framing of the work in 2001.
A quintessential English Folk Art portrait, worthy of inclusion in any representative collection.
