Ref: 1144
A huge and heavy Stoneware Salt Glaze Hunting Jug, inscribed "Sarum Jug" referring to Old Sarum.
Fired to celebrate Queen Victoria′s Golden Jubilee in 1887 and may have been intended to serve ale or mead at a feast. Decorated with vines, bacchic masks, drinking Toby figures, windmills and royal coat of arms.
This "Sarum Jug" is so called perhaps because it was made in Salisbury, “Old Sarum”, or because of its similarity in form to the large kettle jugs made in the 19th century and called Old Sarum jugs.
Damaged in firing but very sound, sections of the outer wall have sloughed away, but the walls of the pot are very thick and faults have not penetrated to the interior. Uncommon. Category: English Folk Pottery. Antique Folk Art. Antique Stoneware. Hunting Jug.
