Original Painted Pine Dresser
Ref: 1658
A good two piece painted pine dresser from a very far away and remote village in Romania, we have dry scraped this piece to traces of its original blue paint. It has unusual features giving a sophistication not often seen such as the half columns to the sides of the doors, which taper to top and bottom. It is also in very good condition with no replaced top mouldings and so on. This would have displayed plates and had much the same function as a dresser did in an Irish cottage. The peasants in this part of Romania were even poorer and had even less fine crockery and smaller dwellings than the Irish peasants did at this time so you can be sure that if it could be seen in its first dress when first installed the picture would be quite poignant and almost medieval in appearance but no doubt very clean and tidy and proud of itself. As time has gone on the dresser has acquired quite an ancient and atmospheric bearing and this is apparent in what you see much enhanced by the fact that we have painstakingly removed later paint.
Fully cleaned restored etc but not waxed.
