Chest of Drawers »
18th cent. Oak Suffolk Chest
Ref: 3314
A really sweet period oak chest of drawers typical of East Anglia, these normally had linen presses to press clothes on top, something like a frame with a corkscrew. This one has no marks on top so may not have had one.
They are called "Suffolk chests" but some books also refer to them as "Norfolk chests" - so take your pick - but they are popular owing to the nice proportions being not so wide or deep yet tall and so presumably fitted up narrow stairs or in niches in farmhouses and halls. The classic ones have, as here, two small drawers up top with two smaller drawers in the middle for spices or valuables.
