Terrific Painted Dowry with 2 Drawers
Ref: 2785
A really impressive antique pine marriage or dowry box, with many stand out features. More than just a box it is really a mule chest ie. box but with two drawers and whilst we have had a number of boxes and armoires from this region before and in this style this is the first one of these we have seen quite like this. It is clearly a special piece and must have been commissioned by a wealthy peasant family who asked the master maker to build and paint the 5 star model from his catalogue. The bold rounded canted corners with moulding are also unusual and more what one would expect to see on an armoire. The drawers are locked with wooden bolts and the substantial decorative lock is retained. The style of painting is typical of the Pardubice region, and well executed and fresh, and the overall condition is excellent. Even the feet are without decay which is most unusual again indicating that the piece has stayed in a house and not been put out in the barn.
