Superb Folk Art Painted Antique Pine Dowry Box
Ref: 2557
A chest, coffer, blanket box, or marriage dowry in excellent condition and with exceptional folk painted in mint condition to top, sides, and front. Where this box came from each village or group of villages, all Hungarian tribes but living in a multi- thnic principality defined their group identity through their similar but differing style of folk painting which was applied to furniture made for the bride forming a large part of her dowry for marriage. The tulips indicate the Hungarian ethnicity whilst the whole is richly symbolic with fertility devices.
Furniture like this often originates from the 19th century and was passed on to the next generation. Here it seems the box was passed down and re-inscribed to the interior to Anna Thomas, or "Tamas Anna" in 1942.
A museum quality piece.
