Small Early Style Box with Geometric Carving
Ref: 1650
These boxes made from hewn planks in a style that predates cabinetry are associated with the shepherd and mountain dwelling peasants of Europe.
Mostly they are large but sometimes one finds cute smaller versions like this one which was at some point painted green. Their archaic character is emphasised by the geometric carving. Boxes like this and decorated in the same way variously called Wallachian chests, Sarcophagus chests and other such names have been made in Europe for 2000 yrs and more. Useful at end of bed or as coffee table.
