Rare Early Pine Dowry Coffer with Love Hearts
Ref: 3209
A large antique pine dowry chest or coffer with original painted detail - this style of box is typical of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. This piece is in remarkably good condition - there is not much early pine furniture not because it was not made but because so little has survived. This piece with painted pin wheels to the base and love hearts in the central panels would have been made for a marriage and may have served it's purpose (to store the dowry) on more than one occasion. The interior is fitted, there is a candlebox, a shelf beneath, and a curious skinny shelf along the back...for counting coins? A feint date to the bottom middle suggests the box was re-used and the paint touched in about 200 yrs ago. The overall painting style drawn and stippled onto the bare wood in vegetable dye colours with some details filled in with colour and in patterns similar to those seen on wall painting is typical of something much earlier. Any painting on the lid has pretty much entirely worn away but you can see traces along the back moulding of a stencilling that is typical of Renaissance or early Baroque furniture.
