Pieta Dowry Box in Original Paint
Ref: 2705
A really solid antique pine dowry chest suitable as coffee table or storage box. Very clean to interior.
Original hinges indicate 18th century date. Certainly neo-classical in proportion - it is as deep as it is high and the width with two panels is almost double the height.
The painted decoration on these dowries was often floral and symbolic with flowers or birds but near to religious centres and pilgrimage sites the traditional decoration might like here just as easily be a combination of flowers with religious motifs. Here on the front is a double pieta, the Virgin with child on the side and on the other probably St John of Nepomuk with Christ suggesting that this box may be from the area near to Pomuk, in the vicinity of Plsen, in Western Bohemia. This area was part of the Sudentenland prior to the expulsion ("odsun") of the German ethnic groups in 1945 and so to call this chest German made might not be wrong. It certainly has that characteristic good build quality.
