Miniature Carved Ark or Wallachian Coffer
Ref: 3295
Very small or miniature arcs or "susek" (as the Hungarians call them) were made and these would have been trade display models taken to market by carpenters and also used in the home for precious keepsakes. The arc, Wallachian coffer or sarcophagus chest, are the quintessential item of furniture of the mountain dwelling peasants who lived by transhumance and these ancient boxes are found wherever they are found whether in Ukraine or in Spain. It is hard to date this piece as the same furniture was made before Christ and up until the early 20th century - this example has a wonderful colour and is very good condition.
