Wonderful Blue and Flower Painted Marriage Bench
Ref: 1594
An antique pine box bench and more. Actually a bed bench, with a drawer that pulls out, as well as a conventional box bench in which the seat lifts up as a lid to reveal a storage area.
Made for a marriage in 1910 or perhaps re-decorated at that time. The style of painting with flowers in reds and greens on a blue ground relates probably to a certain village or area in Eastern Transylvania. This is a particularly well made piece, hardwood (oak or ash in the frame) with pine seat and back rest. The carving is notable too, the rustic Romanian looking “tooth” decoration to the back rest, the smart hand made fielded panels and the windows of spindles decorating the arm rests. This piece was over painted in green during the 20th century and we have removed this carefully to reveal the nicely worn original decoration. Another museum quality piece.
