Unusual Small Antique Settle
Ref: 2381
A really characterful antique bench or settle from the mountain villages in Eastern Europe. A simple primitive form and made of beech with pine seat.
At second glance you see remarkably that the pale beech wood arm rests and front leg supports are made of wood parts that are continuous sections of wood, not jointed or put together, but single branches or roots that turn at right angles. There are primitive tripod stools like this where all three legs are made from a single piece of wood and there is a type of country/ primitive chair found in Western Scotland in which the arm and leg support are made from single pieces of wood just as here. Though a slightly askew appearance results (in this case with the right leg a little angled) the construction method seems to make for much solidity and strength and this piece does stand very solid and with a conventional seating height. A one-off primitive folk art bench.
