Stunning Folk Art Painted Box Bench
Ref: 1951
A fairly long pine and oak box bench with beautiful painted decoration made up of panels of flowers and vases, the main ground colour is a lovely slate blue that has worn nicely on the seat and arms. There are two lids and storage within.
The legs rising up to the arms and back panel are oak, this would originally have given solidity and longevity to the piece which may have rested on a damp floor, and this holds true today.
Condition is original and very good.
It is a marriage piece hence the joyful and carefully executed painting.
As was customary such pieces were passed down to the next generation and there is a signature in the corner of one of the front panels from 1949 suggesting some touching up and restoration of the paintwork at that time.
Whilst some tribal decorative art is derived from walking maps, or hallucinogenic visions, the dense floral and highly colourful paint schemes found on the peasant furniture of Central Transylvania may well be an imitation of embroidery.
