Fantastic 18th cent. High Back Settle
Ref: 2351
A rare and fantastic high panelled back painted pine settle from Western Ireland. Was removed directly from an old cottage on an estate near to the sea in Cork. It has the most amazing layered paint that has crackled and polished to resemble antique leather. Originally such benches were bed benches the front lower panelled section folded out to make a straw bed. In the case of this bench the lower panelled section was partly rotten so we have restored it but at the same time made the seat into a lift up lid and converted the whole piece into a box settle making it far more practical.
This is a particularly good example of a known form of Irish country pine bench and you would be hard pushed to find a similar example outside of a museum. Most of its original condition has been carefully preserved so this piece can live on for many more years and its antique gleam be enjoyed by future generations.
