Wooden Carved Christ in Original Paint
Ref: 1737
An attractive 18th or 19th century wooden carved figure in its original polychrome of bone white, green, black and traces of gold paint. The primitivism of the figure with its abbreviated stress lines and expressive symmetry has an Epstein-like Modernist look though the piece is clearly antique and local. The thorns on Christ’s crown are carved, so too the two remaining nail heads in a hand and the feet. These figures were normally supported on a carved cross but are often easier to appreciate as a figure carving when free of that support.
