Primitive Rocking Horse In Original Paint
Ref: 2034
When Picasso painted figures or animals like horses and bulls with tiny heads and huge bodies or with faces that are half side profile and half face on it was regarded as quite shocking and really original. Of course it was not long before somebody pointed out that Picasso′s originality was not a virgin birth so to speak but a departure from recent norms in fine art and a realignment to alternative and ancient traditions of representation in local and primitive art. Much has been written of the influence of African masks on Picasso′s style and those of his contemporaries but rarely does the local folk art traditions of country areas of Europe get a mention.
When the Modern artists said they wanted to un-learn their academy training to make art like a child what they wanted to encapsulate was something of the freshness and immediacy of this primitive rocking horse from Bohemia. One can only guess that it was home-made by an untrained artist and without the influence of printed media or pictures of horses, or anything similar that would have interfered with the direct expression of the artist′s imagination. To this extent an object like this with quite this expressivity and naive character is most rare and can′t be made again.
