Polychrome Carving of St Florian

An vibrant painted and carved freestanding figure of St Florian, primitive but skilfully executed. It is in excellent original condition and even his staff is preserved. St Florian was a popular figure amongst the country dwelling people in old Europe, homes often had carved figures in niches or tabernacles above the entrance door or in the porch or hallway. St Florian is depicted holding a water can or pailed bucket and he is said to protect the home against fire.
