Folk Art Carved Wooden Frame
Ref: 2011
A terrific and typical piece of Romanian folk art showing the pre-modern thinking of the Romanian wood carver even in relatively recent times. If the peasant wood carver had seen framed icons in churches but never studied one closely to see the jointing then they might make themselves a frame in the same way they would make a dug-out tankard or hewn chest or dough bowl.
This piece as you can see is carved from one piece of wood, an old print is displayed here with glass front held in place by two bars of wood that have been with simple artful thinking attached with nails at top and bottom.
These could be carefully removed and replaced if one desired to replace the image or fit in mirror glass. The piece is essentially a dug-out with a simplified tulip motif at the crest and brown paint to decorate.
Hard to date, could be one or two hundred years old.
